The CAS Gallery at UM, presents the work of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) graduate students running from December 8th - 18th, 2015. The reception will be held on Wednesday, December 16th – 5pm to 8pm at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Gallery located at the Wesley Foundation at 1210 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables. The reception is for all graduating art students. This event will be catered.

The students graduating this December are:

The BFA is a four year program with 72 credits completed in the Department of Art and Art History, with the balance of the 120 credits being in general education courses, giving students an in depth education in the arts combined with a solid University liberal arts education. Graduates often go directly into careers in graphics, photography, museum or gallery work, while some go on to graduate work or start their careers in the fine arts.

The University of Miami presents an invisible man, an exhibition by Erin Thurlow.

Consider the audience:
 
     Viewers cannot be left out of consideration in objective planning.  They bring their own set of experiences to the program and you should try to understand what the viewing audience is like so that you can tailor the objectives to their needs and experiences.  You can consider such factors as probable age, education, prior knowledge and attitudes toward your subject matter.
 
     One of the problems that comes up in audience consideration is that most material could be used by different groups.  You must make a decision about who the primary viewing group will be.  If you try to cover every group you consider, your program will get so broad that it will have no point.

Erin Thurlow (born Seattle, WA) attended Cornish College of the Arts (Seattle), received his BFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 1997and his MFA from Mason Gross School of Arts at Rutgers University in 2003. Solo shows include Mercer Union Gallery (Toronto). Recent group shows include Heat Island at Smack Mellon Gallery (New York). He has been an artist in residence at the Banff Centre (Alberta), Atlantic Center for the Arts (FL), Three-Walls (Chicago), Virginia Center for Creative Arts and the Millay Colony (NY). He has received grants form the Ontario and Toronto Arts Councils. He has also curated a show of New York and Chicago based sculptors, Conceptual Furniture, at the DepArtment Gallery (Toronto). His work, often sculptural and installation based, also includes performance, writing, and the ongoing development of a stand-up comedy act that he has performed in comedy clubs and galleries.

The Department of Art and Art History in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Miami (UM) presents the work of incoming Master of Fine Arts (MFA) graduate students. This exhibition opens Tuesday, August 18th and will be on view until Friday, September 18th. To celebrate the exhibition's opening, there will be a reception for the artists from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 4th. Admission is free and open to the public. This event will be catered.

ArtsUnited, a nonprofit gay and lesbian arts organization and the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Miami presents NAKED. ArtsUnited was founded in 1999 in response to the growing need of local LGBT artists for an interactive and supportive working environment.

Using the literal theme of NAKED as being without clothing or covering; nude and bare of any covering, overlying matter, and vegetation, NAKED exhibits various subject matters that include the nude form to abstraction without the customary covering of protection in thought and material.  Artists included in the exhibit include Sean Black, Diane Lublinski, Richard Viola, Maciel Cantelmo, Greg Little, Michael Jude Russo, Dennis Dean, Chris Lopez,  Allen Pierce, Jennifer Maria, and Henning Haupt.
 
ArtsUnited’s mission is to use the arts to break down historical barriers preventing lesbians and gays from contributing fully and openly to the cultural, social and economic success of South Florida. We strive to accomplish that in many ways including programming art exhibits and performances in mainstream public venues, social networking opportunities, and workshops and seminars. Membership has grown over the years to include 120 members, primarily artists including allies and LGBT. ArtsUnited has become an art-incubator for fledgling gay and lesbian artists, allowing them opportunities to showcase their art in gay-friendly environments, and offering them encouragement and support. The organization also connects them to the larger arts community in South Florida, introducing them to ArtServe, the Broward Art Guild, and other arts organizations.
 
Over the years, ArtsUnited has consistently collaborated with the Broward Art Guild, 9Muses Art Center, Broward County Libraries, Stonewall Library and Archives, Stork’s Bakery, the Museum of Art, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and ArtServe to produce quality programming that has been popular with Broward County residents. ArtsUnited has also used the arts to help other nonprofits raise money such as the annual Holiday Bizarre, Holiday Tops, Ribbons for the Children and Legacy Exhibit. Broward House, PWAC, Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center and the Mental Health Association have all benefited from an ArtsUnited program.

The University of Miami presents The Void, A Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Devin Caserta. Caserta states, "In my drawings I create surface texture and organic forms with illusions of continuous ambiguous areas that recede into a mysterious dark background. This ambiguity allows for the viewer to interpret these mysterious unseen parts of the drawings. My drawings can be read as narratives taking place in a world in which relations between different elements act out evocative biological dramas in unfamiliar environments. There is movement and tension, an internal force that pulls things into the void.”

Devin Caserta received his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree in Drawing from New World School of the Arts College in partnership with the University of Florida. Caserta has exhibited locally at several Museums and Galleries in Miami and the Wynwood Arts District. He is currently completing his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Miami in Coral Gables.

The University of Miami presents Anomalies, A Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Skylor Swann. Swann states, "My clay vessels encapsulate my background in functional pottery while transcending functionality through sculptural means. The lustrous surfaces effectively dissolve the form's boundaries by reflecting the surrounding space giving the illusion of oneness with everything around. In other works nontraditional materials are subjected to ceramic processes resulting in what I like to call anomalies; that which is out of the ordinary or unexpected. Together they are presented as a mind-scape environment based on the gardening concept of earthly paradise."



Skylor Swann received a Bachelors of Science in the Fine Arts from Souther Utah University in Cedar City, UT followed by a BFA from Montana State University-Bozeman. Swann has exhibited throughout the Western United States and more recently in Florida. Swann has owned and operated his studio practice for over a decade called Mangey Clay Art Studio and sells his work through the Old Spanish Hospital Gallery in Saint Augustine, FL. He is currently completing his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami in Coral Gables.

The University of Miami presents ARTIFICIAL OASIS, A Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Jena Thomas. In Thomas’s rich, color-saturated fictional landscapes, the natural world is disrupted by swimming pools, patios, golf courses and other human debris imposed on nature, illuminating the visceral boundaries between the fabricated and organic. Rich colors and textures create a luscious other world where Thomas’s surreal imagination tangles with reality.

Thomas has shown often in Florida and New England, with recent exhibitions at the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery, Boca Raton Museum of Art, and Art Palm Beach. Recently featured in the art publication “New American Painting”, Thomas is a recipient of the Ruth Katzman Scholarship from the Art Students League of New York and was a finalist in Miami University’s, Young Painters Competition in Oxford, OH. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, MA and is currently completing her Masters of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL. Jena Thomas’s work is currently represented by the Fernando Luis Alvarez Gallery in Stamford, CT.

Each year the Art and Art History Department holds a student art competition that is open to all students who have enrolled in an art course that year. A guest juror, typically a distinguished gallery director, curator or art critic, selects pieces from the submitted artwork and awards cash prizes to outstanding student artists. The Salon des Refusés is named after the celebrated Salon des Refusés exhibition of 1863, in Paris, in which the Impressionists exhibited their revolutionary new paintings that had been “refused” by the French Academy.

The University of Miami is pleased to present More Land Than People: Life on the Texas High Plains, a Master of Fine Arts exhibition by John R. Van Beekum. In this exhibition Van Beekum returns to his roots, as he explains: “Land dominates the everyday lives of the sparse population on the flat, arid Texas High Plains. Their very existence is continually shaped by the ground beneath their feet. As I walked around farms, workplaces, ranches, oil fields and homes, I marveled at the region’s rich light and detailed colors. They complemented the uplifting spirit, determined optimism and guarded wariness of a people in wait of what the next dawn would bring.” The digital high-resolution photography is presented in large scale archival prints. 



A native of the Texas High Plains, Van Beekum has exhibited his fine art photography in juried national exhibitions in the United States since 2005. This is his first solo exhibition since he returned to creating personal documentary and non-objective photography after four decades of career photojournalism, working in Texas, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, and Miami. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Miami in 2012, he was accepted into the graduate program of UM’s College of Arts and Sciences where he is currently completing his Master of Fine Arts in Photography/Digital Imaging.

The University of Miami is pleased to present BURST! A Celebration of Arte Povera. Featuring artists Martin Casuso, Valeria Rocchiccioli and Troy Simmons.
Curated by Milly Cardoso, BURST pays homage to the Italian art movement Arte Povera. The exhibition showcases a "rebirth" of this radical art movement of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Through bursts of color, the use of found objects, recycled materials, and sheer creativity, the viewer will experience how Arte Povera has served as inspiration for Casuso, Rocchiccioli, and Simmons.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Martin Casuso
Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Martin Casuso is the son of a Cuban Freudian analyst father and a Dutch artist mother. Creative from an early age, he has strong memories of building forts in the mangrove swamp of his childhood neighborhood in Coconut Grove. His work often involves a melding of childhood memory and adulthood interest in art history. Casuso received his Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Miami and his BFA from Florida International University.

Valeria Rocchiccioli
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Valeria Rocchiccioli uses mass-produced discarded objects as her main medium; Rocchiccioli's sculptures remind us that ordinary can become extraordinary. This is evident when the artist shifts the material's original intention of existence by weaving plastic bottles, caps and zip ties into unpredictable forms. The densely patterned and colorful sculptures draw inevitable comparisons to Sao Paulo's landscape, large population and diverse society. Rocciccioli received her MFA from the University of Miami and is represented by Now Contemporary Art Gallery.

Troy Simmons 
Born in Texas, resides in Miami, Florida. Simmons states , “My inspiration is drawn from surroundings, situations and experiences I encounter daily.  Everything from a weed growing through a crack in the sidewalk, to the people in the isles of the local grocery store, all stimulate my creativity. My latest work reflects the diversity seen in the tapestry of South Florida. Layers of ideas, people, and cultures all mixed in one urban environment.” Simmons holds a degree from Oklahoma State University in Architectural Design.

The CAS Gallery at UM, presents the work of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) graduate students running from December 9th to 19th, 2014. The reception will be in the evening on Wednesday, December 17 – 5pm to 8pm at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Gallery located at the Wesley Foundation at 1210 Stanford Drive, Coral Gables. The reception is for all graduating art students.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts students graduating this December are: Margaret Fragel (Photography), Pimlada Kongkham (Graphic Design) and Lizzy Lunday (Painting)

The BFA is a four year program with 72 credits completed in the Department of Art and Art History, with the balance of the 120 credits being in general education courses, giving students an in depth education in the arts combined with a solid University liberal arts education. Graduates often go directly into careers in graphics, photography, museum or gallery work, while some go on to graduate work or start their careers in the fine arts.

PULL, an exhibition of works by UM graduate students, explores the tension that exists between various artistic dichotomies, such as competing mediums, subjects, colors, formal and psychological concerns. By examining the "push-pull" dynamic across 2D & 3D works, artists in this show reveal an interest in visual movement -- either literal, or implied -- that asks the viewer to look upward, outward, or inward. The exhibition will run from December 2, 2014 - January 20, 2015.

The University of Miami is pleased to present Naiad featuring paintings by artists and alumnae Jacqueline Gopie and Kathleen Staples. Curated by Milly Cardoso, Naiad captures the beauty and movement of water while exploring its power and the feeling it evokes. 



Jacqueline Gopie: This series of paintings reflects on adolescence and summertime waters - those childhood feelings of just being lost in the world of fantasy and play and having adventures floating in and flying underwater.

Kathleen Staples: Water fascinates me.  I work with fluid acrylic mediums, wets on wet that behave like water in many ways. They are colorless like water, so, like water, they can reflect the blue sky or the flaming sunset or be gorged with color, flooding and surging as I pour and push the paint and  “go with the flow”.
 
Water also conceals its depth, and each colored layer I lay down interacts with the layer it covers and the one to come. The layers of fluid color suspended in acrylic medium create a variety of transparency, surface effects, and texture as I work intuitively with color, the “soul” of the painting. Water is all encompassing: one floats and sinks, and there is the sensation of one small thing in an immensity. The loss of self is transporting, and ultimately each painting seems to find its own best way, out of my control.



ABOUT THE ARTISTS



Jacqueline Gopie was born in Kingston, Jamaica and moved to NYC with her family at the age of 12.  She spent over 20 years in the Army before retiring and studying painting at the University of Miami receiving her MFA in 2012.  Her studio is in the Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood.



Kathleen Staples earned her BFA at Parsons School of Design and initially embarked on a successful career as a landscape painter. However, while working toward an MFA degree at the University of Miami, where she now teaches foundation design, she evolved the landscape format into large abstract paintings that reflect the fluid nature of the new acrylic mediums. Thereafter her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions and placed in many private collections, and she was awarded the prestigious Individual Artist Fellowship by the State of Florida.

Valeria Rocchiccioli received a B.A. in Industrial Design from the School of Architecture and Communications, Universidade Mackenzie, São Paulo. The artist moved to Miami in 2008, later joining the University of Miami as a graduate student and teaching assistant and will receive her MFA in the spring of 2013. Her works are in private collections and she has exhibited in many local galleries.

Valeria was the recipient of the 2012 Juror Best in Show Award for MFA Candidates Exhibition in the Lowe Art Museum. Next month Valeria will participate in two other exhibitions, Sustainotopia in the Miami Convention Center from April 16 to 22 and Blue Sphere in the Wynwood Exhibition Center.

An Experiment In Suspended Storytelling

It is deeply programmed in human DNA to question and probe in an attempt to make sense of the world that surrounds us. The frozen moments in Jose Miguel Cabrera's photographic series RELATIVity play on this behavior with scenarios that operate on the level of puzzle and invite the viewer to decipher a story.

Cabrera's images work inter-dependently with the viewer to present a story that unfolds inwardly - as opposed to the conventional tale which unfolds linearly and forward through time. The cinematic montaging of his still images provide the subtle arc to a silent narrative that weaves and explores the phenomenon within a viewer's individual reality and secret history to, ultimately, yield an experience of unique personal meaning.

an exhibition of prints dcurated from the printzero studios exchange

PrintZero Studios presents an international exhibition of printmaking culled from the PrintZero Studios 8th Exchange. The exhibition was juried by David Jones, Director of Anchor Graphics in Chicago, IL.

A unique exhibition, the artwork is selected from a pool of over 275 artists from around the world who participate in the yearly PrintZero Studios Exchange. Artists who participate in the exchange each produce 15 prints, which are traded amongst the other artist participants. Each artist receives a portfolio of 13 artworks back. Two prints from the artist’s edition are kept for archive and exhibition. From these, our juror selected 30 prints for the exhibition.

Cortez's work examines social and cultural behavior as a medium for communication through observations in traditional courtship, and dance as a form of expression. This interest in relationships has led to her most recent work, a sequence of black and white drawings compiled into a picture book, in which the absence of words opens up possibilities to other interpretations. This exhibition explores interpersonal relationships and how human interactions establish a social reality. Storytelling and personal narrative have been employed in a series of hand drawn and digital illustrations, depicting stories of love, affection, and romance, all combined with subjects of self-realization, self-autonomy as well as the awareness of surrounding situations.

About the Artist

Colby Katz's MFA photography exhibition, Of Time and Beauty, is a reflection of values in an image obsessed world. She unravels the richness and complexities of contemporary American subculture by providing glimpses into worlds that are as inaccessible as they are comprehensible. Drawn to the complexities of womanhood, her most recent work delves into the lives of three women, each with their own unique view of beauty. As both a former child model and pageant contestant, Katz re-examines notions of feminine beauty in the twenty-first century. She looks at how it is defined, challenged, and revered in modern society while employing an unguarded and open perspective.

University of Miami Wynwood Art Gallery presents the Fifth Annual Cane Art Fair.

In honor of Art Basel Miami Beach, the Art and Art History Department presents the 5th Annual Cane Fair featuring artwork of UM students earning their Masters in Fine Arts. Works on display include photography, sculpture, ceramics, painting and more. This exhibition will run from December 5, 2012 – January 25, 2013.

Artists featured in this exhibition include Leah Brown (Sculpture), José Miguel Cabrera (Photography), Dan Listwan (Ceramics), Eddy Lopez (Printmaking), Gerardo Olhovich (Painting), Colin Sherrell (Sculpture), and many more.

University of Miami faculty members Lamia Khorshid and Alex Adams showcase recent works at the University of Miami Gallery in Wynwood.

Khorshid, born in the East, educated in the West, will be showing conceptually driven images that explore relationships, religion, the ebb and flow of family dynamics, and the idea of "home" as a transient ever changing space. Khorshid first turned the camera on herself and her displaced domestic settings in 2010 after an uprooting divorce. In the past year, she reconnected with and explored her relationship with her Muslim family in a new series entitled Family Dynamics. These images will be exhibited publicly for the first time, intertwining with her self-portraits in those spaces she has called "home" during her recent travels.

Alex Adams has 20 years of experience working with glass. Although he considers himself a craftsman and a champion of the crafts, he often works with a variety of materials and could be taken for a sculptor or multimedia artist. His recent works include the use of float, crushed, slumped and blown glass, as well as found objects and wood. Some of the materials used, as well as the inspiration for the work, are from a recent visit to the residence of someone suffering from compulsive hoarding. 

About the Artists

Lamia Khorshid is an Egyptian born artist, educated in the United States, currently residing in Miami Beach, Florida. She teaches Photography & Digital Imaging at the University of Miami. An active exhibiting artist working in the medium of photography and video, Khorshid’s most recent solo show entitled Hotel St Michel was on exhibit at Curator's Voice Art Projects in the Wynwood Arts District in November 2011. She has exhibited in several of the local art fairs, including Art Palm Beach, MIA, and Art Miami. Her work has been most recently published in several exhibition anthologies by Photo Place Gallery in Vermont. She will be presenting a paper at the upcoming 2013 Hawaii International Conference on Arts & Humanities. Artist Website: www.lamiakhorshid.com

Originally from New England, Alex Adams credits his love of craft and the industrial setting of glass work with his early exposure to the various manufacturing jobs and factory employment during the two years he spent in Ohio after leaving home at age 16. Between earning his BFA from MassArt and his MFA from Tyler School of Art, Alex owned and operated a glass blowing studio in Tucson, AZ. Until recently, he owned and operated a metal fabrication shop in Philadelphia. He now teaches glass blowing and casting and runs the glass studio at the University of Miami. He also maintains a small art studio located in the Bird Road Arts District. Artist Website: www.artistadams.com
