Hi, I’m Yidie Chen, but everyone knows me as Tico. I recently received my BFA from the University of Miami. During my undergraduate studies, I concentrated in the areas of graphic design and sculpture. As an artist, I am passionate about working in both 2D and 3D and consider myself a multi-disciplinary artist who enjoys creating in various mediums. I explore both digital and physical modes of creation. My skills range from designing with Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign for 2D work, and Rhino to creating ceramics, glass, and metal pieces. I am interested in creating artwork that conceptually explores my cultural background. View my BFA exhibition online and more artworks at ticochen.com. Grace Chepenik Jacksonville, Florida My work aims to translate the metaphysical relationships between spirit and nature through a cacophony of emotions and reaction. I celebrate the connection the subject has to the universe through intense colors, brush strokes and textures. I chose to portray animals because they instinctively engage with nature, which I represent through converging patterns, halos and symbols. I approach my work as a sculptural-painter. My first love has always been painting, but since discovering a deep rooted passion for glass, it has permeated into the work as a physical presence of the subjects’ aura. The glass further celebrates the idea of the aura and energy in a physical sense as it expands and transforms the space. My work is set to honor these relationships and place an emphasis on it for the viewer. It is a metaphorical presentation through a marriage of form, color, subject and imagery. Sydnei Rubin Riverwoods, Illinois I am a recent graduate of the University of Miami, class of 2021. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design with a minor in art history. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I have broadened my creative skills by learning to conceptualize and visually communicate through illustration and design. I enjoy creating with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. My areas of expertise include graphic design, branding, packaging and typography. When I am not in the studio creating new work, you can probably find me in the ocean. I love scuba diving and will go as frequently as I can. Scuba diving and the ocean inspire a lot of my work, especially in designs I create for fun. Ocean conservation is incredibly important, and I try to educate as many people as I can about it, often using graphic design to do so. Along with my passion for the ocean, I also enjoy running, reading, and playing tennis and badminton. Check out my complete works at www.SydneiRubin.com

Unconventionality has always been a curiosity of mine; it is what makes us all human. I was born and raised in Miami, FL and painting and creating art has always been a passion of mine. I am a transfer student that received my Associate of Arts Degree from Miami Dade College. Receiving my BFA in Painting from the University of Miami is an achievement I am very proud of, one that wouldn’t have been possible if not for the support from my family, friends, and the guidance of my professors. As an artist, I am interested in portraying the female form within abstract expressionism. In my work, I present bold brush strokes that embody figures to create a sense of movement and emotion. I intend for the viewer to receive my work as they feel free to interpret it. I paint with acrylic or house paint and use paintbrushes, palette knives, and other unconventional materials like cardboard for tools. Driven by my curiosity I will continue to find and form art from my perception of reality as a female painter inspired by the human experience.

In the years following the founding of the State of Israel, close to a million Jews fled their native Arab lands. Hostility and expulsion brought an abrupt end to these once vibrant communities, scattering its members to the four corners of the earth. Until recently, little has been formally documented, leaving a significant part of Jewish history largely untold.
The photographer of THE FORGOTTEN EXODUS – AN AMERICAN REFUGE is J Tomas Lopez, an artist with a lifelong passion for portraying the vulnerability of the passage of time through his stunning portrait photography. As a young Cuban boy who emigrated to America in the 1950’s, Lopez felt out of place. The stories of the Jews from North Africa and the Middle East that truly ignited his interest. “I realized that the story of the Sephardi Jews is the story of every immigrant. You're in a place—you think you're home—and then something happens. There is the displacement, the sense of otherness. I identified very much with everyone I photographed.”
J Tomas Lopez is the Chair of Art and Art History at the University of Miami. He has been showcased in over 350 group exhibitions and 35 solo exhibitions. His work is included in many permanent collections including the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of American Art, La Biblioteque Nationale de France, The International Museum of Photography, and the Museum of Modern Art. His work has been exhibited across the United States, Europe, China, Japan and in numerous publications.
THE FORGOTTEN EXODUS – AN AMERICAN REFUGE was photographed entirely in South Florida and curated by University of Miami’s Department of Religious Studies professor, Dr. Henry Green and produced by Media Director David Langer.

For Darby is a survey exhibition of George Bethea's paintings from 2006 through 2019 and is in honor of Walter Darby Bannard (September 23, 1934 - October 2, 2016). Over their 25 year friendship, Bannard has championed Bethea's paintings in numerous essays. Often stating that Bethea is one of the best painters of his generation. Bannard wrote "At the same time that he is an innovator, ahead of his time, Bethea is an artist who belongs in spirit to earlier generations, for whom art was as serious in intention as it was joyful in experience. Bethea's painting make us turn from our usual pictorial presumptions to more intensely see and feel."

Vibrant Femmes features 26 recent paintings and prints by American artist Christine Di Staola whose work celebrates the beauty, power and intimacy of color and gesture. Inspired by the light and lifestyles of the Mediterranean and Miami, Di Staola’s paintings reflect her cultural experiences and her interest in combining bold color with the body’s power to communicate. On view: June 5 - 24, 2019
University of Miami Gallery
2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4
Miami, FL 33127
Capturing the expressiveness of the female figure in a state of arrested gesture, Di Staola revels in depicting the natural physicality of the self. Her paintings have as their punto forza a contemporary palette of unblended pigments and highly saturated hues that have been heavily influenced by the artist’s association with Italian culture and the natural beauty of the bel paese. In the works on view in the “Vibrant Femmes” exhibit, colors combine and clash like an animated and convivial social gathering and, according to artist David Y. Chang, like “a symphony … that the artist orchestrates with her own instruments…in a successful play between transparency and opacity”.
Born and educated in southwestern Ohio, Christine Di Staola lived and worked for almost 30 years in Le Marche region of Italy before returning to the United States to earn her MFA in painting at the University of Miami. Her prints and paintings have been widely exhibited across the United States and internationally and have won numerous awards. She currently resides in Miami Florida.

The University of Miami presents When the Curtain Rises, a Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Juan Sebastian. When the Curtain Rises | Retrospective Solo Show features a collection of 23 exceptional black-and-white and color photographs and a sublime poetic visual installation experience of contemporary Colombian photographer Juan Sebastian, an artist best known for his magical photo-realistic compositions and the richness of emotions captured through his lens. The exhibition encompasses an important body of work which reflects on four fundamental axes: self-portrait as search for identity; time; the body as the space for intimacy, and motifs from fashion as symbolic of theater, death, and simulation. In each series these focuses intertwine, and the artist explores not only formal qualities, but as well his own humanity, and uses photography as means of communicating with his viewers. *Image courtesy of Juan Sebastian. Sebastian’s photographs depict an unusual reality that is engendered by instinct and driven by emotion. The images are inspired by the genre of the magical realism found in Gabriel García Marquez and Isabel Allende’s literary masterpieces, where reality and fiction, sleeping and waking, and myth and routine coexist. Within this realm there is a space where the unbelievable becomes believable, and where the established is transgressed and surpassed.

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 13, 2019 – 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The University of Miami presents In Light of Her, a Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Alex Hodge. In Light of Her features three series of ceramic objects in which the history of art is examined and reimagined in a way that values women, not only in body, but in story, wholeness, power, and love. Through juxtaposition of history and her own iconography, she creates poetic objects that invite the viewer to participate in creating meaning. The women she invents exist in the present but are of the imagined future in which we all have room to flourish, to tell our stories, to give and receive love, and to express the beauty and pain of the human (female) condition. Fundamentally, In Light of Her is a celebration of the tenacity and vulnerability of women and clay, an interplay of history and hope. *Image: Alex Hodge, A Tired Mother, porcelain, 2018, 9.5 in x 9.5 in x .5 in. Exhibition on view: June 5 - 24, 2018 The University of Miami presents SeaChange, a Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Karli Evans. SeaChange is a combined photography & short film project that explores identity expression and the contemporary drag practices of a select group of Miami-based queer performance artists. Evans created a series of environmental portraits that showcase these personas as living concepts integrated into the Miami landscapes that helped shape them. The film, a collaborative production co-directed by Cassandra Keith, is a mini-series of vignettes that delves into each performer’s creative process, personal approach to drag, and vision of their persona as an idealized sketch or fantasy. SeaChange will feature this multimedia collection together in a shared space for the first time. The exhibition examines psychology of thought surrounding perception of self and outward expression, encouraging viewers to question the binary gender constructs reinforced by modern society. Saturday, June 9, will be an interactive opening for the show incorporating live performances from featured artists, a screening of the film, and the sounds of Miami’s underground queer scene. Navigating between still photo and moving picture mediums, Karli Evans is a visual artist living and creating in Miami. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Visual Journalism from the University of Miami, where she returned to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Photography & Cinematography. Energized by people watching and urban exploration, Evans utilizes creative storytelling as a way to document experiences, examine identity, and explore public personas. Her debut experimental film, Float, is an official selection of New York City Independent Film Festival 2018, Berlin Feminist Film Festival 2018 and Miami Fashion Film Festival where it premiered locally in December 2017. SeaChange is her first solo show. SeaChange will be on view from June 5 - 24, 2018 at the University of Miami Art Gallery located inside the Wynwood Building, 2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4, Miami, FL 33127. Exhibition on view: Opening Reception: Saturday, May 12, 2018 – 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The University of Miami presents Outsider, A Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Anna Meier. Outsider is a community-based project that draws on the complex history of Miami and focuses on the social and racial structures within the city's different neighborhoods. Using natural materials gathered from the streets of Miami, artist Anna Meier has created ten wearable sculptures or body-scapes, each representing a different neighborhood in the city. She then returns to each neighborhood with the completed bodyscape and asks a passerby to take her photograph. Outsider will feature these wearable sculptures and the 10 photographs of them taken in different locations around the city by different community members. The intention behind this work, is to explore and test the boundaries of racial, social, and class divides within Miami by inverting the traditional roles of subject and photographer, and to stimulate a dialogue about how race relations in Miami and the country can be improved. The work featured in Outsider is strange, eerie, and a little silly, a reminder that laughter is often the best way to break down barriers.
Anna Meier is an artist living and working in Miami Fl. She received her BFA in Fibers from the Oregon College of Art and Craft and is currently completing her MFA in sculpture at the University of Miami. In her work, Meier focuses on blurring the lines between art and life to create beneficial and eye opening experiences. Each of her projects is an attempt to understand how art and creative work can make a positive impact on society.

Izia Lindsay is a mix-media artist from the twin island of Trinidad and Tobago. He is exploring symbolism in Caribbean iconography that is rooted in tradition but interpreted with contemporary ideas. Caribbean iconography is used as a basis to create his multi-layered artistic narratives. He uses bold, geometric shapes that juxtapose and intersperse to form his pieces. The thematic whole is an epic narrative reproducing the dualities of his turbulent, cosmopolitan Caribbean life. Lindsay is also known for his large murals that can be seen in Miami, one most recent being the columns at Shops at Sunset Place. He has worked and led a number of mural projects both in the Caribbean and the United States. Some of these murals can be seen in Wynwood Arts District, University of the West Indies, Trinidad, Suriname and Barbados. Exhibition on view: July 8 - August 4, 2017 Opening Reception: Saturday, July 8, 2017 – 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. University of Miami Art Gallery at the Wynwood Building 2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4 Miami, FL 33127 The University of Miami presents Sweet Summertime by Jacqueline Gopie. Ah the joys of sweet summertime – school is out and play is in…we can all relate to going to the beach…it is the highlight of summer…playing in the surf and sand…sun on shining skin…these could be anybody’s memories. If you grew up in the Caribbean or a tropical environment your summertime fun as a child was probably filled with fantasy and imagination while floating in the water or running and playing on the beach. And perhaps it was punctuated with little moments of silent bliss, solitude and self-reflection or just simply marveling in wonder at the natural world around you. The first intention of this group of paintings is focusing on that fleeting time in childhood when the long, hot summer is stretched out in front of you - where everything is new and you have nothing to do but play. The second and less obvious intention is to infuse the presence of more black and brown bodies into that homogenized arena called fine art. By implanting images of black and brown children having a chill time onto your visual cortex I am intentionally contrasting the negative images we are constantly bombarded with by every form of media. The visual cortex learns from experience and self-organizes its structure to process visual input. We need to SEE that we are all the same. We ALL want to play in the sun…we all want a sweet summer. Jacqueline Gopie was born in Kingston, Jamaica and lives and works in Miami, Florida. Immediately upon retiring after a twenty-one-year career in the United States Army, she attended the University of Miami where she received her BFA in 2005 and her MFA in painting in 2012. She is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation 2016 Emerging Artist Grant and credits much of her success as a painter to her professor and mentor Walter Darby Bannard. Sweet Summertime will be on view from July 8th - August 4th, 2017 at the University of Miami Gallery located inside the Wynwood Building, 2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4, Miami, FL 33127. Exhibition on view: March 4 - 27, 2017 Opening Reception: Saturday, March 4, 2017 – 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. University of Miami Art Gallery at the Wynwood Building 2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4 Miami, FL 33127 The University of Miami is pleased to present We are HERE by Jenna Eferin. We are HERE is an installation exhibition highlighting the damaging effects of water pollution on the natural habitat of South Florida. Up-cycled bottle glass is used to represent the flora, fauna, and water issues engulfing the rambler in a South Florida environment under destruction. The mismanagement of water in multiple forms, although preserving our lifestyle and helping us to thrive in some respects, is killing wildlife and threatening drinking water aquifers. As the title suggests, the source of the problem stems from people. Corporations are often labeled as the scapegoats, but corporations are merely people protected by a piece of paper. South Florida was originally considered an uninhabitable wasteland. But through efforts of dredging, draining, and genocide it has become an attractive vacation, retirement, and rejuvenation location. Ironically, through the use and abuse of these reclaimed lands the native environment continues to be annihilated. Nature will prevail, but much of it will be lost. Considered harmonious co-existence is the only answer for human and nature to persevere and thrive. Jenna Efrein grew up in Brooklyn, New York and moved to Miami (2014) from Philadelphia. She received her MFA from Alfred University School of Art and Design in Sculpture/Dimensional Studies (2009). Currently, she is a Lecturer at the University of Miami in the Art and Art History, Sculpture department. In 2014 a major piece was acquired into the Patricia and Paul Stankard Collection. As a multimedia artist, she has participated in a variety of group shows: MOCA NoMi: Intersectionality, the Wiregrass Museum, AL: B16, Re:Produce: Pompano, Fl, and the Biennial at the Hollywood Art and Culture Center. She had her first solo show (Feb ’16) in the Projects Space at the Mindy Solomon Gallery (Miami). Additionally, she is a resident artist at Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood. Curated by Milly Cardoso Exhibition on view: February 1 - 25, 2017 Collectors Preview: Thursday, February 9, 2017 – 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Opening Reception: Saturday, February 11, 2017 – 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. University of Miami Art Gallery at the Wynwood Building 2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4 Miami, FL 33127 The University of Miami is pleased to present Carol Todaro: Bell, Book and Candle. In celebration of the exhibition's opening, there will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, February 11th from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Curated by Milly Cardoso, Bell, Book and Candle showcases Carol Todaro’s new and selected artists’ books, sculpture and works on paper. These elegant pieces are lyrical and emotional, directing the viewer to react and recollect. For Todaro, the book is an emblem that can evoke an emotional or narrative response. Cardoso states, “My first experiences with Carol’s artwork gave me a sense of familiarity. Her thematic approach resonates strongly with me because it’s poetic and subtle, yet remains accessible and relatable. In our collaboration on the development of the show we discovered a common love for books and storytelling. I discussed my dream of becoming a librarian; She shared her thoughts on conceiving and making artists’ books. Our shared interest went beyond the book and has made me more enamored of her work.” ARTIST STATEMENT The sculptural pieces in this show interpret books using structures and materials that are strange to their usual form and function. A table or music stand becomes both binding and stage, creating an altered reading experience. In addition, a series of pages presented on the wall are the result of studio improvisations with a limited set of images. Found elements and odd gifts were the starting point for the pages; color is a crucial component as well. The combined works are meditations on the spoken and written word, the way materials communicate meaning, and the attraction of discarded objects in a world full of things. ABOUT THE ARTIST Carol Todaro focuses on the book as an artistic form. The Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Library of Congress and the Jaffe Center for Book Arts at Florida Atlantic University, among other public institutions, have collected her work. Recent group exhibitions include Super Natural at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC, and work/work at the Miami Dade College Museum of Art and Design. ArtsUnited’s mission is to use the arts to break down historical barriers preventing lesbians and gays from contributing fully and openly to the cultural, social and economic success of South Florida. We strive to accomplish that in many ways including programming art exhibits and performances in mainstream public venues, social networking opportunities, and workshops and seminars.
Membership has grown over the years to include 120 members, primarily artists including allies and LGBT. ArtsUnited has become an art-incubator for fledgling gay and lesbian artists, allowing them opportunities to showcase their art in gay-friendly environments, and offering them encouragement and support. The organization also connects them to the larger arts community in South Florida, introducing them to ArtServe, the Broward Art Guild, and other arts organizations.

The University of Miami presents MASQUES, A Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Danièle Gabriel. The artist focuses on both traditional and digital mediums with an interest in costumes, as a reference to her childhood experiences. The exhibition showcases multiple series and mediums, portraying an unsettling atmosphere through carefully composed figurative narratives, depicting costumed figures from both historical and contemporary pop culture, in a style resembling magic realism. Gabriel uses her costumed characters as a stand in for particular disquieting memories. She then activates these memories by constructing uncanny narratives with her costumed characters. Understood in this way Gabriel’s images are unflinching invitations to share in the quirkiness and playfulness of her multifaceted persona.
Born in Miami Florida, Gabriel earned her Associate degree from Miami Dade College, and her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Miami in Coral Gables and is currently earning her Master of Fine Arts degree in painting. She studied art history, painting, printmaking, and graphic design as well as other mediums, all of which influence her style.

Several of the pieces exhibited were begun during her residence in China as a Graduate Artist Fellow at the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute at Jingdezhen, home of the world's finest porcelain. The University of Miami presents Path to Somewhere, A Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Michael Zimmerer. In Path to Somewhere lay a snowy mountain range hides a silver river, and beside its frozen shore there is a small village. These images depict the final day as this community go up in flames and its people wash away in what is now the Red River. The series documents the story of the lone survivor and what would become the memories of his homeland. The river ran red for one day, but in his memory it stayed like that forever.
The story in this visual novella is not unlike many children’s lives around the world. It is about a story millions have experienced, seen and heard. The story of one group overtaking another, the story of a child orphaned and a landscape destroyed.
Michael Zimmerer was born and raised in a small town on the Eastern coast of Florida. Enamored with the landscape, fiction and the power of storytelling, he now focuses on telling the stories of both humans and the environment. Michael’s images recreate the idea of a photograph by merging painting techniques and digital technology. He has been featured on Fast Company, Adbusters, Nordstrom and published internationally and attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and University of Miami. This will be his fourth solo show.
Path to Somewhere will be on view from April 5th - 24th, 2016 at the U of M Art Gallery located at the Wynwood Building, 2750 NW 3rd Avenue, Suite 4, Miami, FL 33127. Exhibition on view: March 8 - 27, 2016 Opening Reception: Saturday, March 12, 2016 - 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. University of Miami Art Gallery at the Wynwood Building The University of Miami presents Landscape of Emotions, A Master of Fine Arts exhibition by Vali Steele. Born in Columbus Ohio, Vali Steele is a glass sculptor and mixed media artist with an interest in landscape references, as a placement of memories. Within certain geographies, she uses easily found organic matter, as if it were gifted by the place as souvenirs. These remnants often find their way into the corporeal structures of her glass sculptures, memorializing and giving them life within. Landscape of Emotions is about the personal attachments humans have with the environments they immerse themselves in. Changes in emotion, change biochemistry, and that changes the human landscape. Steele uses references to nature & their meaning, exploring how they connect with an individual’s ‘nature’, as one landscape. Transforming a distant place, a memory, to a current place of being. Loucks states, "As humans have learned, some paths we choose for ourselves, other paths are chosen for us, and most paths are combination of the two. Periodically, random events will occur in our lives that interrupt our plans and goals. As the Burns poem says, “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” We have to accept the unchangeable facts of our lives, adjust what we can and continue on. This is why a broken ceramic piece can be an opportunity rather than a failure." Artist contact information:
